Can I leave my job and go to work for another employer when I am on a work permit?

No, if you are on the HSMP scheme you can work freely for any employer in the UK. You are also free to set-up your own company if you choose. If you are on a work permit it is important that you do not change employment until your new employer has made a successful work permit application. How straightforward this will be for your new employer depends on how similar your current job is to the new one you wish to take up. No, this visa is a one off visa granted for taking a holiday in the UK and doing some work to support yourself when you are here. It cannot be extended or renewed.
