Points Based System [PBS] launched today
29th February 2008

The new Points Based System [PBS] is taking effect from today; Tier 1 for Highly Skilled Migrants is the first of five separate Tiers, providing a robust and measured means of ensuring that only the best can work in Britain. Other changes include the introduction of new licences for employers that wish to employ migrant workers, which will be a mandatory requirement for Tier 2 Work Permit applications, which are due to take effect in Autumn 2008, together with on-the-spot fines being issued to those employers that do not confirm to the rules and anyone found hiring illegal workers in the UK.

The Training and Work Experience Scheme allows an organisation to bring in a non -EU citizen for the purposes of training towards a professional or specialist qualification, or practical work experience.

  • Educational or professional qualifications
  • Demonstrate ability to benefit from training
  • The training should be undertaken for a minimum of 30 hours per week
  • There should be a detailed programme covering the training content and duration.
You can be permitted entry to the UK for up to 3 years.

Work Experience Scheme
The Work Experience Scheme is normally for 1 year but can be increased to 2 years.

  • The work experience should be related to previous employment or academic study.
  • You must be surplus to the employers normal staffing needs
  • The work should be for a minimum of 30 hours per week
  • A detailed programme must be provided for the period

If you have a TWES permit for 12 months or under, you must spend at least 12 months outside the UK before you can return in a work capacity. If you have a TWES permit for over 12 months, you must spend at least 24 months outside the UK before being able to return.
