Points Based System [PBS] launched today

The new Points Based System [PBS] is taking effect from today; Tier 1 for Highly Skilled Migrants is the first of five separate Tiers, providing a robust and measured means of ensuring that only the best can work in Britain. Other changes include the introduction of new licences for employers that wish to employ migrant workers, which will be a mandatory requirement for Tier 2 Work Permit applications, which are due to take effect in Autumn 2008, together with on-the-spot fines being issued to those employers that do not confirm to the rules and anyone found hiring illegal workers in the UK.

Science & Engineering Graduates Scheme (SEGS)

The Science and Engineering Graduates Scheme (SEGS) allows non-EEA nationals who have graduated from UK higher or further education establishments in certain physical sciences, mathematics and engineering subjects with a 2:2 or higher to remain in the UK for up to 12 months after their studies to pursue a career. Applicants may apply for leave under the SEGS scheme if they have existing leave as a student. Entry clearance is mandatory for those seeking leave to enter under the Science & Engineering Graduates Scheme. There is currently a demand in sectors such as research and development and financial services for maths, science and engineering specialists. Eligibility There are conditions that an applicant must meet in order to qualify for the scheme. - They must have completed a degree course (with at least second class honours (2:2)), Masters course or PhD or the relevant list of DfES approved physical science, mathematics and engineering courses. - If you are unsure whether your course qualifies call one on our advisors who will be able to help you.
- The applicant must intend to work during the period of leave granted under the scheme.
- Be able to maintain and accommodate themselves without recourse to public funds.
- Intend to leave the UK at the end of their stay, unless granted a work permit, HSMP or applicable VISA.
