To allow highly skilled individuals to become self employed, employed without restrictions or work as an independent contractor. This application is based on the persons age, qualifications, previous earnings and UK experience. It also has a mandatory English and maintenance requirement.

Tier 1 General is currently suspended by the UK Border Agency. You cannot make an application in this category at present. However, if you are already in the UK as a Tier 1 General migrant, you can apply to extend this from within the UK; if you still meet the points based criteria.
