Tier 2 Sportsperson

This scheme is for leading sportspeople and coaches who are

internationally established at the highest level, and
will make a significant contribution to the development of their sport in the UK

The sponsor must obtain written confirmation from a recognised and approved governing body that the person meets the above requirements.

Approved governing bodies

Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Canoeing, Chinese Martial Arts Cricket, Fencing, Field Hockey, Cycling, Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Ice Hockey, Ice Skating, Jockeys and Trainers, Judo, Kabbadi, Lacrosse, Motorcycling, Motorsports, Netball, Netball, Polo, Rowing, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Shooting, Snooker, Speedway, Squash and Racketball , Swimming, Water polo, Diving and Synchronised Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Triathlon, Water Skiing, Wrestling

It is possible for other bodies apply to be included on this list, which is regularly updated. The governing body will need to demonstrate that it meets the UK Border Agency codes of practice.

Football loans and transfers

Existing players, sponsored by a football club in the UK, do not need to make a new application as long as the original club continues to sponsor you and updates their sponsor licence. If you are permanently transferred to another football club in the UK (or if you are on loan from overseas to UK football club), then you must make a new application (which requires a new certificate of sponsorship and governing body endorsement) .

Initial applications are granted for a maximum period of 3 years. It is possible to extend this for a further two years within the UK, before the person may qualify for settlement.

Applications can be made from within the UK or overseas. Each case will need to be assessed on its own merits.
