Tier 2 Sportsperson

Your employer must be registered with the UK Border Agency and hold a valid sponsorship licence. All applications require the person to have

  • a sponsor; and
  • a valid certificate of sponsorship.

You must also meet the following criteria:-

  • 50 Points for Attributes
  • 10 Points for English language
  • 10 Points for Maintenance (funds)
Attributes
The sponsor can award the certificate which should confirm that:
  • they have obtained written confirmation from the appropriate governing body which demonstrates that:
  • you are internationally established as a player or coach at the highest level, and
  • you will make a significant contribution to the development of your sport at the highest level in the United Kingdom; and
  • the post could not be filled by a suitable settled worker.
English language
You must have 10 points for English language. This will be met if you:
  • are a national of a majority English speaking country; or
  • pass an approved English language test; or
  • hold a degree that was taught in English and is the same as a UK bachelor's degree.


There are also transitional arrangements for those who are already in the UK in another immigration category.
Maintenance (funds)
You must have 10 points for Maintenance (funds). This will be met if you:
  • have <£800 in personal savings, held for a continuous 90-day period ( which ends no more than 1 calendar month before the date of your application; or
  • have written confirmation from your sponsor that it will maintain and accommodate you until the end of your first month of employment in the UK if required. Only available to A rated sponsors.


There are also transitional arrangements for those who are already in the UK in another immigration category.

Each set of criteria must be fully supported with the specified documents in order to meet the scheme.
